UNDERESTIMATING CHALLENGES

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, […] And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age’.” Matthew 28:18-20

Taylor Anderson, a missionary kid, was greatly influenced by her adventurous parents. At the age of seven, they moved to Zambia for a two-year service, which ignited Taylor’s spirit of adventure and made her feel restless to be in one place. Throughout high school, she actively participated in various missions across the US, which further fostered her commitment to serving God. Her college years provided her with international exposure, including missions in Palau, China, and India, ultimately inspiring her to become a teacher.

After graduating, Taylor taught in the US for two years. However, she found the lifestyle unfulfilling. Seeking guidance from God, she had to choose between two overseas opportunities: becoming an assistant girls’ dean in Norway or taking a teaching role in Timor-Leste, where her parents were also serving. After careful consideration and consultation, she confidently chose Timor-Leste, anticipating challenges but believing in her adaptability due to her travel experience.

As a TCK (third culture kid), she thought it would be very easy to adjust to the new culture, country and people. However, upon arrival, Taylor realized that she had underestimated the difficulties she would face. Taylor faced formidable obstacles such as culture shock, jet lag, and homesickness. Yet, she was able to overcome these challenges by seeking a supportive community and relying on her faith, which became vital.

As a teacher at Timor-Leste Adventist International School (TAIS), Taylor was able to successfully navigate diverse teaching situations, from starting with thirty third graders to teaching outdoors in sweltering heat. By God’s grace, the school has significantly improved conditions, providing air-conditioned classrooms and new whiteboards; and now, the students and faculty have a more appropriate facility to learn.

Reflecting on the past few years, Taylor acknowledges the initial hardships but emphasizes the overwhelming blessings and joys experienced. She recognizes the service as a volunteer, highlighting its demanding nature and asserting that it is neither a vacation nor an easy endeavor. Despite the difficulties, Taylor firmly believes that the journey is ultimately worthwhile in serving the Lord. As the school year ends, she confidently expresses gratitude for the life-changing opportunity in Timor-Leste.

Please, pray for our missionaries, volunteers, and Global Mission Pioneers. Your faithfulness sustains their ministry.

CHALLENGE FOR THE FAMILY:Let’s follow Taylor’s example and embark on our own adventures of service, whether it’s doing something you’re not used to, distributing a few books with messages of hope, or sending an inspirational song. Together we can make a difference and experience the joy of serving others in His name!
